General Order #8: 2017-2018 Series

  1. MEMBERSHIP: We currently have 11,804 members reported for 90.84%.  We appreciate your support with the “Together we Can” membership year for 2017-2018.  We need 1,189 members to reach 100%.  Complete membership as of January 31, 2018 can be found online at www.alvfw.org.
  2. DEPARTMENT GENERAL ORDERS:  are directive and are to be read/discussed at the next Post/District meeting and filed for reference.
  3. NATIONAL GENERAL ORDER NO. 6 STATES:  Attention is directed to Section 213 of the National By-Laws concerning any Post in arrears for any financial obligations to County Council (if applicable), District, Department and National for fees, dues, poppy money, supply money, failing to have the office of Quartermaster properly bonded in accordance with Section 703, failing to ensure that the Post is properly insured in accordance with Section 709, failing to submit properly completed quarterly Post Trustee Repost of Audit, Post Election Report for the ensuing year, or other obligations, shall be deprived of all representation in District meetings, county Council meetings (if applicable), District, Department and National Conventions. Such representation shall be restored promptly upon proper adjustment of such deficiencies.
  4. ALL STATE TEAM:  The State Commander will select an ALL STATE TEAM based on the performance of each individual post.  Prerequisites are listed in the  2017-18 Program Book.  Being 100% will not always make the team.
  5. COMMANDER’S POST AND DISTRICT:  It is your responsibility to insure that any change in the officers of the Post and District is sent to State Headquarters immediately.  Include Phone and E-mail address and Department will notify National.
  6. COMMANDERS:  Section 220 of the National By-Laws, “Vacancies and Removal of Elective Officers” states that “Any elective Post Officer removed by the Department Commander, by reason of failure to pay current dues or by vote of the Post under the provisions of this Section, shall not be eligible to serve in any Post Office in the same administrative year in which the officer is removed.
  7. COMMANDERS:  The distribution of VFW Buddy Poppies will be conducted according to the provisions set forth in Section 711 of the National By-Laws and Manual of Procedure.  Department, District, County Council and Post Commanders should arrange now for the distribution of Buddy Poppies for the Memorial Day Campaign in their respective areas.  All profits accruing from the distribution of Buddy Poppies shall be used for the relief of disabled and needy veterans and their dependents.
  8. COMMANDERS:  The letter dated October 31, 2000 from the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board waivers the requirement for the Auxiliary to sign in as a guest with a member sponsor.  They have the same rights under the waiver as a member.  This does not waive the requirement to have 150 VFW members to hold a Class 1 retail liquor license.  You must have 150 paid VFW members.
  9. Any payments due to Headquarters can be processed on a credit card: Discover, Visa or MasterCard.  Payment for Buddy Poppies or registration for any conference or convention will be accepted by credit card.  Please send reason payment is being received, amount and current credit card information with expiration date and billing address.  The information can be received by phone, mail, e-mail or fax.
  10. COMMANDER'S HOMECOMING:  Commander Doherty will have his homecoming April 13 - 15, 2018 at the Selma Post 3016, 299 Kings Bend Rd., Selma, AL.
  11. COUNCIL OF ADMINISTRATION MEETING:  The next Council of Administration meeting will be held April 15, 2018 at Post 3016, 299 Kings Bend Rd, Selma, AL at 0900 hours.
  12. STATE CONVENTION:  will be held at the Hilton, 8 Perimeter Park South, Birmingham, AL 35243 May 31, 2018 - June 2, 2018.  Room rates are $89.00 plus tax.  Reservations must be made prior to May 17, 2018.  After May 17, 2018 cut-off date rates will be regular rack rate.  Room cancellation date is 48 hours prior to arrival date.  For reservations call 1-205-967-2700.   Registration is $50.00 and must be received by Noon May 25, 2018.  REMINDER:  YOU MUST BE REGISTERED WITH DEPARTMENT HEADQUARTERS TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE REDUCED HOTEL RATES.
  13. VFW NATIONAL CONVENTION REGISTRATION: Section 222 of the Manual of Procedures states each Post will pay, in advance, a national convention registration fee of twenty-five dollars ($25) which shall entitle the Post to a packet of convention information and materials and one identified registered delegate for the National Convention.  Each additional delegate attending the National Convention will pay a ten dollar ($10) delegate fee provided the Post has paid the mandated $25 advance registration fee.  All advance registrations should be mailed to the VFW National Headquarters, 406 West 34th Street, Kansas City, MO 64111, ATTN: Convention Registration or you may register on-line by going to www.vfw.org.
  14. 116TH National Convention will be held July 21 – 25, 2018 in Kansas City, MO.  Housing reservation information will be located on the convention website accessed through the main VFW website at www.vfw.org.
  15. MEMBERSHIP MISSION: Recruit, retain and mentor a stable membership base, including all generations of veterans, which is well-versed in institutional knowledge and actively involved at all levels of the organization.LEGACY LIFE MEMBERSHIP: This prestigious program is available to all Life Members, and is now available in memoriam for past life members. Three levels of membership each offer their own package of exclusive member benefits.  Financial contributions to the Legacy Life Member program are tax deductible to the maximum extent allowed by law.
